Michigan sets the floor for who may work a private security post. Security guard screening in Michigan follows the Private Security Business and Security Alarm Act, 1968 PA 330. Metro One Security checks every applicant against that standard before a first shift.
The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs licenses the agency and enforces the Act. A licensee answers to the Department for the conduct of each person it employs, under MCL 338.1067(1).
An employee hired by a licensed agency after June 21, 2002 has to be at least 18 years old. That employee also has to have a high school diploma, a GED or the equivalent. Both requirements come from MCL 338.1067(2).
Those are minimums written into the statute. Metro One Security screens past them.
What Metro One Security checks beyond the statute
An applicant has to be a United States citizen or otherwise permitted to work here. Health has to be good enough for the physical duties of the post.
Every applicant clears a background investigation and drug testing. Communication skill gets tested too, because most of the job is talking to people before anything escalates.
The company also looks for initiative and a willingness to follow direction. An officer who cannot take a correction does not last on a post.
Rosters filed with the state four times a year
A licensed agency files a complete employee roster with the Department every quarter. The filing dates are April 15, July 15, October 15 and January 15, under MCL 338.1067(3).
A missing or inaccurate roster can suspend a license. The Department also declines to process a renewal when the prior two-year period of rosters is incomplete.
That schedule gives a client an independent way to check an agency. Ask any bidder whether its rosters are current.

The Department licenses the agency. That agency answers for the conduct of every officer it employs.

Yes. Look up the license through the state and ask the agency whether its quarterly rosters are current.

A felony conviction disqualifies an applicant under MCL 338.1056(1)(c). An outstanding warrant for arrest does the same.
The Act also names offenses from the five years before an application. Fraud or deceit, impersonating a law enforcement officer and assault appear on that list.
The Act disqualifies an applicant with two or more alcohol related offenses. Illegal use or possession of a dangerous weapon appears on the list as well.
